Posted by Ryan in MassDriver.org on April 6th, 2010
Due to the record rainfall, puddles remain all over the place. Drivers should be catious of puddles on the road because they may be hiding potholes.
Information that some Massachusetts drivers are learning the hard way.
Limited by financial restraints, the state cannot keep up with the formation of these dangerous holes.
“It seems like everywhere you go, there are a lot of potholes,” says Patricia Costa in a interview conducted by NECN.

The severe storms and flooding that began on March 12, 2010 has been declared a major disaster by President Barack Obama.
The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal aid will be available to those affected by the severe storms. This federal aid will supplement state and local recovery efforts.
The aid will provide federal funding to affected individuals in Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester counties.
State Director of Human Services for the Salvation Army, Brenda Beavers,
“We’re still in immediate response. We’re assessing what the needs will be, of course, like everybody else. We’ve started to distribute clean up kits. We have teams doing recovery all over the state”
Laws aimed toward safer off-roading
Posted by Ryan in MassDriver.org on February 5th, 2010
A recent article on MassDrive explained the search for stricter laws on snowmobile operation. After further consideration, the state Senate has determined that improvements need to be made on safety regulations for operators of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).
The bill establishes a minimum age for operating ATVs such as snowmobiles or dirt bikes. All riders will now be required to register with the state and wear helmets. Unfortunately, this bill came at the expense of many lives. Furthermore, the National trauma Data Bank has record that more than 77 percent of the injuries and deaths related to ATV accidents were children.
Hopefully the new bill will help with the 33 percent incease in ATV related injuries since 2001!
How can we make the roads safer?
Posted by Ryan in MassDriver.org on January 7th, 2010
The Ford Motor Company and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working together to advance automotive technology to reduce driver stress. Officials from Ford and MIT strongly believe that lowering the stress levels of drivers will increase the safety of the roads. Working together, they would like to use vehicle techologies to decrease stress and consequently improve safety.
Jeff Rupp, a Ford manager of active safety research explains the process and implementation of the research:
The project will identify specific stress-inducing driving situations, monitor a driver’s reaction to the situations using biometrics and evaluate methods to incorporate new stress-reducing features into the next generation of Ford products.” Rupp strongly believes that by reducing stress load placed on a driver, “through the use of our existing technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning … our voice-activated communications system, we are proactively guiding drivers away from difficult situations.
Advances in technology directly related to the safety and overall well being of drivers can only mean good things. We would like to extend our thanks to the staff from MIT and Ford, for their dedication to make the roads safer.
Massachusetts Mandatory Auto Insurance Laws
Posted by Cassandra in MassDriver.org, Uncategorized on January 4th, 2010
To first time drivers and auto owners the multiple insurance agencies, coverages, and state laws may seem a bit overwhelming. Starting with the very basics of auto insurance, it’s important to know that auto insurance is legally required in Massachusetts. While auto insurance may be legally mandated, the benefits an insurance policy in the event of an accident are so great you should want to purchase auto coverage.
What are sufficient limits? Massachusetts law mandates when operating a vehicle it has certain minimum insurance coverages. Taking a look at these coverages is a good start to understanding what amount of coverage you should purchase. The Massachusetts minimum coverages include:
- Bodily Injury Coverage: $20,000 per person & $40,000 per accident
- Uninsured Motorist Bodily Liability: $$20,000 per person & $40,000 per accident
- Personal Injury Protection:$8,000 limit
However the minimum state coverages are rarely enough in the event of a serious accident. For example, if you’re involved in a head on collision, chances are the above coverages will not be enough for the entirety of the accident. If you are considering minimum state coverages please read the article: “Why You Need More Than the Minimums“.

Comparing Quotes in Massachusetts

Auto insurance is mandatory to drive a vehicle in Massachusetts, and with good reason. Auto insurance will help pay the cost of damages to another person’s auto or property, your own vehicle, even your passengers medical bills depending on the types of coverages purchased. Although the benefits of insurance are obvious, choosing the right carrier is more difficult.
Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers about their auto insurance. Ask if they have any tips from their experience comparing quotes or have anything to say about their current carrier. Also be sure to take a look at any insurance carrier through the Better Business Bureau and National Association of Insurance Commissioners websites. Read up on the number and severity of complaints made against any auto insurance company you may be considering. Signing a policy with an company that consistently has bad reviews and serious complaints may not be in your best interest.
Try shopping online, finding and comparing quotes may be easier than you believe. After the Massachusetts auto market was deregulated many drivers have stayed with their previous insurer. A great way to save money is to compare quotes from different insurance companies. When comparing these quotes however make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance warns drivers:
When comparing quotes, keep in mind that coverages, limits, deductibles, and discounts have big effects on prices. A small difference in even one of these areas can make a bad quote look like a good one.
An even easier way of comparing auto insurance quotes is through a auto insurance broker. A broker represents you, helping drivers compare and find the most affordable plan. Brokers can look over insurance quotes and explain the benefits and differences between them. When shopping around give MassDrive a call. Your insurance shopping experience will be breeze when someone who knows the ins and outs of auto insurance compares the quotes for you.
Check Insurance Before Driving Rentals
Posted by Cassandra in Consumer Advocacy, MassDriver.org, Massachusetts Auto Insurance Rates, Saving Money On Auto Insurance on November 30th, 2009
As the holiday season takes full swing many travelers find themselves in need of a rental car. When purchasing rental cars most businesses will offer the option of additional insurance. It’s important for a driver to check in with their current carrier to find out what coverages would follow members of the policy.
Many drivers who already have an auto insurance policy will find their current coverage offers identical or better coverage than what rental companies offer. A number of drivers will decline the coverage without knowing what their own auto insurance policy covers leaving themselves under or uninsured. While on the contrary other consumers purchase the additional coverage which their current auto insurance would cover.
Not only is it important to consider current auto insurance, but other insurance policies held. For example someone with renters or homeowners insurance policies may cover burglary of things from inside the car. Also health insurance policies may cover the driver’s medical bills should an accident occur.
Another great alternative to checking with your current auto insurance policy is to check with your credit card company. Some credit card compaies will offer secondary auto insurance when you charge the rental. If they do offer secondary coverage, it’s still very important to call your auto insurance carrier to confirm between the two coverages damages would be paid for by them and not out of your own pocket.
Mass Home Sales on the Rise
Posted by Cassandra in Consumer Advocacy, MassDriver.org, Saving Money On Auto Insurance on November 25th, 2009
The Warrner Group, a publisher of real estate information based out of South-Boston, reported last week Massachusetts single family home sales have have risen 17% from October or 2008. This has made October the 4th consecutive month of increased home sales. Many of the sales seem to be driven by first time homeowners looking to take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit, that was to expire the end of November but has been extended into 2010.
This increase in sales will also mean a number of new homeowners are looking for homeowners insurance. To save money on your insurance policies ask your insurance carrier for a companion policy. For example MassDrive offer these policies, when you sign up for your auto and homeowners insurance together you receive discounts on both.
Why You Need Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Posted by Cassandra in Consumer Advocacy, MassDriver.org on October 19th, 2009
According to the Insurance Research Council more than 14% of U.S. drivers are uninsured. You may be wondering: So what? How does this affect me?
Your chances of being involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist is one in every seven accidents. If you’re involved in an accident where an uninsured motorist is at fault, you better hope that person has a few thousand dollars saved away – unlikely – or know that your own insurance will cover the damages.
Uninsured Motorist coverage is designed just for these situations. If you’ve opted for underinsured motorist coverage, your insurance company will foot the bill for your medical bills . Even further if you have Underinsured Motorist coverage, your own insurance company will pay for your auto repairs. Do yourself a favor and look over your current policy, ensure you have these coverages. If you don’t, it may be time to compare prices and shop around for another affordable insurance policy with these coverages.
