Cancelling Your Auto Insurance

Write it on a post it note. Program it into your phone. Leave yourself a voice mail at home. What ever it takes, don’t allow your auto insurance to lapse.

Here are a few things to remember about auto insurance cancellations:

  • Driving with out insurance is illegal. Should anything happen while you’re driving, not only will the violation be added to your driving record with a citation, raising your insurance rates – if you’re at fault for an accident, all damages your insurance company would have paid will come straight out of your pocket.
  • You don’t need to wait for renewal time to cancel a policy. Shopping around to find another policy with better rates is a great idea. No need to wait until your current policy is up to start saving.
  • Never ever ignore your insurance bill. Ignoring your insurance bill may be cause for cancellation due to non-payment. When this occurs not only will future insurance companies see you as a higher risk, they may ask you to pay the full insurance amount up front.
  • Cancellation must be done in writing. When you notify your current insurance company of your cancellation allow a reasonable amount of time for cancellation. When notifying the company, be sure and include the date you would like cancellation to take place giving yourself peace of mind for when you’re old coverage is up and your new one is to begin.

Progressive settles charges for $120,000

Why will Progressive be paying Massachusetts $120,000?

If you haven’t heard, Progressive was investigated for its business practices after entering the Massachusetts insurance market in May of 2008. Attorney General Martha Coakley was the first to draw attention to the problem. From the start of their operations until late last year Progressive was comparing their 6 month premium prices with other companies 12 month premium. After Progressive realized they had made a huge mistake they did try to fix their mistakes but it did not help them when the charges were finally settled on May 26, 2009.

Is there any way you can protect yourself from this problem? MassDrive.com makes this easy by finding affordable Massachusetts auto insurance options and comparing them for you! It is crucial that you can get accurate quotes from multiple insurance providers to help you make the best decision. The best deal is only visible when you consider all of your options before making a decision.

Massachusetts Auto Insurance Rates Slowly Coming Down

According the Boston Globe, Massachusetts auto insurance rates are slowly lowering for many consumers.

Other companies that have recently changed their auto insurance rates, according to published reports, include Commerce Insurance Co. of Webster, which is lowering its average rate 4.5 percent; Liberty Mutual of Boston, which is raising its average rate 4 percent; and Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance Co., which is raising rates an average of 3 percent.

“After four successive years of declining rates, including last year’s 10.7 percent decrease, loss trends, expenses, and inflation dictated a need to increase rates,” said John Natale, a spokesman for Liberty Mutual, which is based in Boston.

Progressive raising their rates in MA – Bait & switch or natural market adjustment??

The Boston Herald reports that Progressive plans to raise their rates in MA starting April 1.   Critics point to this as the bait and switch they were expecting from the Ohio-based insurance company that took 1.2% of the MA auto insurance market in less than a year.  Progressive representatives argue that the rate hike is a natural market adjustment after one year in MA.  What do you think?

Banter on Boston.com

The Globe story yesterday prompted some real debate on Boston.com over the value of independent insurance agents versus direct auto insurance carriers like Progressive and Liberty Mutual. I tend to agree that direct writers spend their “commission” dollars on advertising just like agent companies pay agents. However, you can’t argue with real savings and Progressive.com is an easy place to buy auto insurance.

Keep the companies competing for your business and the more companies the better! Check out the banter and read for yourself.

NECN delivers a very important story for Massachusetts auto insurance consumers – if your insurance company raises your rates because of an accident and you think it’s unfair, you won’t be able to appeal it to the commonwealth beginning on April 1. Check out NECN’s reporting:

Here is a key point explained by NECN:

If you feel unfairly surcharged by your insurer, you can dump them and get a new insurer.

‘You’re Entering Massachusetts,’ Progressive

Progressive Auto Insurance is now available for Massachusetts Car Insurance buyers, due to the introduction of competition by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  According to this article in the Insurance Journal, Progressive is selling its services both directly to consumers and through agents.  According to Cathy Wilton-Bransch, a spokesperson for Progressive:

“We appreciate the work the [Massachusetts Division of Insurance] has done to create a regulatory environment that allows companies to compete for customers. We hope that come May 1, drivers will check out progressive.com and see what we have to offer.”

In a related point, The Insurance Journal notes that Liberty Mutual insurance company plans to return to Massachusetts, as a result of deregulation of the insurance market in Massachusetts.
